What does an oil change involve?

Even if you drive very little, your oil may be due for replacement. Check how your car indicates the interval.

Used engine oil draining into a collection pan

In one sentence

An oil change removes old engine oil and replaces it with fresh oil that meets the engine specification. The oil filter is usually replaced too.

How often should you change the oil?

Check the handbook or follow the oil service indicator as instructed by the manufacturer. The interval can be based on time, mileage or both. For a low-mileage car the time limit can come first.

Ask which oil is included in the quote and whether it covers the filter, labour and VAT. Topping up restores the level. An oil change replaces the old oil.

Choose oil according to your engine requirements. A label such as 5W30 describes viscosity. Also check which standard or manufacturer approval your car requires. Oils of the same viscosity can carry different approvals.

To find out when the next change is due, compare the last invoice with the schedule and note both date and mileage. If your car uses a variable interval, follow its oil service indicator as described in the handbook.

When comparing prices, ask about the quantity of oil, its specification and the filter. The number of litres depends on the engine, so a total quote for your car is more useful than an advertised starting price.

Ask the garage to record the oil used on the invoice. This helps when topping up later or visiting another garage. Keep the handbook to check the correct specification.

Low mileage since the last service

Suppose your manufacturer specifies an oil change after one year or 15,000 km, whichever comes first. After one year and only 5,000 km it is still due in this example.

Keep the invoice and note the oil specification alongside the date and mileage.

Fixed or variable oil change intervals

An oil change replaces used oil following the manufacturer’s procedure. A new filter is often part of the job. Confirm which oil and filter were used so that you have a reliable record for the next service.

Check whether the car uses a fixed or variable interval before booking. Compare the dashboard service reminder with the previous invoice. A variable system can calculate a service recommendation based on use.

Before booking, ask which filter and oil are included. Some engines require a particular fill quantity when a new filter is installed. If the quote only mentions a volume, ask the workshop to confirm which oil specification it will use and whether the price includes the filter.

What does an oil change quote include?

You drive relatively little and wonder whether the oil change can wait. The schedule includes a time limit. Check the date of the last change alongside the mileage limit. If the time limit arrives first, use it when planning the visit.

Ask whether a quote includes the correct quantity of oil, the filter, labour and used oil disposal. Check whether any inspection is billed separately.

For home servicing, collect used oil separately and dispose of it according to local rules. Check in advance which collection point accepts the oil and filter. Record the same service details you would keep from a workshop invoice.

Ask the workshop to reset the service reminder as specified after the job. If the car reports a fault as well, have it assessed separately. A reminder reset is part of recording the completed service.

Recording oil, filter and mileage

Keep the oil code, quantity, filter and mileage. If you add oil between services, record those amounts separately from the quantity added during a change.

Keep the service date, mileage and oil code together. Put any later top-up on a separate line. At the next service the workshop can see what was done during the change and whether the engine needed oil unusually often between visits.

Frequently asked questions

Does topping up count as a change?

No. Most of the old oil remains in the engine. Record top-ups and changes separately.

Should the filter be replaced too?

Follow the schedule for your car and check whether the quote includes a filter.
